Just about anywhere on the internet, there is a blog, vlog, podcast, or some cool guides on traveling and places to go to, but not here. Here, we softly ramble.
I originally imagined writing about places and adventures I have had either on my own or with good company, but genuinely struggled with writing in any of those “traditional” formats that everyone follows now. It’s a little like when in elementary school, you’re given a writing prompt and you have to try to write something with a purpose to it, but you look around and see everyone else writing without a problem yet there you are, stuck. How do I start? I can’t think of anything… what can I write about? Okay, I wrote something, cool… keep it going… I’m stuck again.
When I finally admitted to myself that “traditional” formats are not for me, my mind kept going back to an idea I had since the beginning: postcards.
My original idea:
Originally I created an Instagram account revolving around my bear, Alfred, where I would post a picture I took of him somewhere we went and write the caption as if it were a postcard from that place. It was fun and soon I was learning that there is a stuffed animal community there, but it didn’t feel like a fit for me. Over time, I decided to deactivate that account to think about how I wanted to approach this idea. I considered bringing that idea to life here, but it still didn’t feel right.
Until recently, I had ‘Adventures’ as the category name for traveling but it didn’t ~feel~ like me. I would stare at it and blank out. When I changed it to what it is now, postcards, it started to feel right.
My new idea:
I wish to write about places I have been to, things I have seen and eaten, and moments I experienced but with the spirit/feeling of a postcard. At times I may just make and design it as a postcard, but for the most part, I’ll write as if I’m pre-writing a postcard to you. With this mindset it’ll be more comfortable for me to share pictures and vlogs, and it will encourage me to continue writing and come out of my shell more.
The locations will be out of order and not necessarily where I went to recently, to keep myself on my toes and keep those stalkers guessing [insert laughing/crying face here]!
